What is Ikkat

. The word Ikkat / Ikat is derived from the Malay word "mengikat" which means ' to tie'  Bindings which resist dye penetration  are applied to the threads in the desired patterns and the threads are dyed.

The process of altering  the bindings and the dyeing of more than one colour produce multicoloured patterns. When the dyeing is finished , the bindings are removed and  the threads are ready to be woven into cloth.

These pattern of dyed threads are skillfully assembled  by the artisans into warp sheets and weft sequence. This is then prepared for use on handlooms where they are woven into fabric by trained ikkat weavers

Repeated tie and dye process on the yarn makes it necessary to use two ply yarn as a standard raw material for ikkat weaving.

Use of two ply yarn for ikkat enhances the drape, fullness, comfort and the durability of woven fabric. All ikkat fabrics are identical on both sides and have distinct feathered look which makes the fabric truly unique and invaluable.
